Get tips for avoiding and managing diarrhoea when you have a stoma.

If you have a colostomy or ileostomy, it’s possible that you may have episodes of diarrhoea. Loose, watery stools may cause you to change or empty your stoma bag more often than usual. Diarrhoea may be caused by illness, tummy upset, or even food poisoning.

Ways to deal with diarrhoea

You may find it helpful to wear a drainable stoma bag due to the increased watery output from your stoma. If you believe the diarrhoea is simply due to changes in your diet or daily routine, here are some foods that may help you find relief:

  • Under-ripe bananas
  • Jelly babies
  • Marshmallows
  • Smooth peanut butter
  • White rice
  • Pretzels
  • Yoghurt (natural, or flavoured with honey)
  • Noodles and pasta
  • Buttermilk

If you are concerned your output is not slowing down, it is recommended that you seek the advice of your doctor or stoma care nurse.
