Colostomy irrigation is a method of cleaning the bowel by instilling water via the stoma at regular intervals. By irrigating a colostomy regularly, it is possible to avoid daily output and wear only a small colostomy pouch. This leaflet illustrates irrigation and pouch changing at home. Each step is illustrated with colour photos.
Also included are irrigation advice and tips for daily stoma care. Irrigating a stoma should always be initiated and taught by a stoma care nurse. They can provide the necessary information, determine if irrigation is advisable, and decide when it is time to begin.
